Pacific Salmon Foundation Charity Auction

The Pacific Salmon Foundation has an upcoming event to raise money for supporting salmon restoration and regeneration with a charitable “Salmon Art Show”.

When: Wednesday March 2, 2011
Where: Sandbar Restaurant on Granville Island

The art show will provide an opportunity to purchase striking images of salmon in their natural B.C. habitat. For anyone who has purchased a fishing license in the last twenty years, the romantic images of silver fish, dynamic in their natural environment and pursuing their prey, will be very familiar. These images have appeared for the last 23 years on the Salmon Conservation Stamp that every angler must buy in order to keep salmon caught in B.C.’s tidal waters.

Now, for the first time, high-quality lithograph reproductions of these images are being put up for silent auction at the Sandbar Restaurant. As a special bonus, each of the prints will be individually signed by the artists themselves, who are among Canada’s most renowned wildlife artists. Globe & Mail Fish Farm Sea Lice Article is Absolutely Shameful

Every story has two sides.

Then there is the truth.

We're not ones to mix our nose into politics, nor do we claim to be experts in the fish farming practices and sea lice problems of British Columbia's coast.

We are however concerned citizens, who care about the well-being of our wild fish stocks from both an economic and personal vantage.

The Globe & Mail, Canada's most circulated national newspaper, posted an on-line article today titled; "Sea lice not cause of wild salmon collapse, researchers say".

This is an absolutely shamefully and misleading title to an uneducated Canadian public. The majority of Canadians know little, if anything, about the harmful effects that fish farms have caused on the British Columbia coast. To post an article, with this headline is one of the most disgusting pieces of 'journalism' we've seen and author Mark Hume should be ashamed to have his name on it.

Fish farming and explosions in sea lice levels hurt wild salmon. Period.

This is a scramble tactic of the fish farm industry who has found a partner in Hume and the Globe & Mail. They know what they're doing is damaging to the coast of British Columbia. They're making lots of money doing it though, so they need to justify their poor practice with bullshit reports and suckers like Hume who are willing to promote them.

What is really infuriating about this article is that it stemmed from a report by lead author Dr. Gary Marty of the University of California, has worked for the fish farming industry in the United States.

How can the Globe & Mail issue such an article that comes from the fish farming industry and title it in such a cowardly way?

A sad day for journalism in Canada and a huge step backwards in convincing the public of the poor and harmful practices of fish farms in British Columbia.

Please do not believe this fish farming rhetoric.

Young Guns Fly is a not-for-profit group of anglers who are dedicated in encouraging youth to pursue all of what fly fishing has to offer.

They're based out of Vancouver, British Columbia and do plenty of good from offering casting days for kids to cleaning up local urban streams.

Killer Whale Attacks Salmon ~ A Chromer Vid

Here's a little clip that we shot this year up in Haida Gwaii while guiding for the summer salmon season at Langara Island.

Very often when a pod of Orca (Killer) whales roll through an area the fish turn on to the bite, especially chinook (king) salmon. Last minute panic feeding before they have to evacuate!

We had just hooked up into a decent fish right as a pod of 4 or 5 Orcas rolled through. Here's the vid...

Our buddy Gregg Lauder is a quiet guy who likes his steelheading. We were fishing with Gregg this fall on the Bulkley River when he managed to dragged his ass out of the jetboat one afternoon, bombed out a few casts and swung his fly into an absolutely stunner wild Bulkley River steelhead.

Big Sturgeon Fishing on the Upper Fraser River

It's no secret that the Fraser River in British Columbia is home to the world's most spectacular sturgeon fishing. The big hard-pulling sturgeon that live in the Fraser's murky waters have long been a prize for anglers in search of a rod-corking, arm-burning, monster-fish experience.

Most of the sturgeon fishing is on the lower stretches of the Fraser River but in late September we ventured to the upper Fraser River canyon with guide Kevin Estrada from Sturgeon Slayers and got a taste of a new and untouched sturgeon fishery.

What we found was some of the most ridiculously insane sturgeon fishing we've ever experienced! Check this video that we shot in one day up there.....

One BIG SLAB!

Here's our man, Tommy T, releasing an ABSOLUTE SLAB of a chinook salmon!! This big fish was hooked during the summer of 2010 off of Langara Island on the northern tip of Haida Gwaii, located on BC's north coast. It fell to a flashy little cutplug herring fished tight to the kelp in Boulder Bay.

After about two hours the fish had pulled the boys over two miles off shore from where it was hooked. The fish was finally scooped into the net, much to the relief of Tommy and his guest Sean, a first time salmon angler from Florida.

This photo along with a few others were snapped. The fish was measured and calculated out to 68 pounds! This big boy was put on his way, carefully released by Tommy and cruised off healthy to see another day.

Squamish Winter Steelhead Wrap Up

Here's a quick little wrap up of our winter season of steelhead fishing out of Vancouver and Whistler. There's not to many days left before the warm days of May bring river levels up and blow things out to an unfishable state.

A few sunny days is all it takes to blow out the Squamish River and bring the the winter steelhead fishery to a standstill. With the warm temperatures on the horizon we're doing our best to make our last days fishing on the river count!

Overall the 2009/2010 winter steelhead fishery on the Squamish River system was a successful one, but one that started a bit later than normal. When the fish did start moving into the main stem Squamish and its tributary the Cheakamus then things heated up quick with lots of nice fish taken on the fly.

Late March through April was the most prime time this year and we expect the fishing to be on into May. The warm weather will blow the river out quite quickly though so if you're planning to head out, make it soon. We have guided trips leaving from Whistler and from Vancouver.

New PSF Salmon Conservation Stamp for 2010

The PSF is the Pacific Salmon Foundation dedicated to the conservervation and rebuilding Pacific salmon stocks.

Each year they issue the a Salmon Conservation Stamp that accompanies tidal (saltwater) fishing licenses in British Columbia. The Salmon Conservation Stamp is an additional cost to the regular license fee but is needed to retain salmon and the money raised through its purchase goes towards salmon rehabilitation.

Each year, for the past 21 years, judges take a look at submissions that are to be featured on the stamp. This year the Salmon Conservation Stamp features a painting titled Surface Tension by Mark Hobson, a biologist and artist based in Clayoquot Sound.

Since 1989, a portion of funds raised from the purchase of the Salmon Conservation Stamps have raised over $10 million to over 1200 salmon conservation and restoration projects in British Columbia and the Yukon.

Thompson River Bait Ban & Pics

We aren't ones to get too political, but we are committed to the well being of British Columbia's wild salmon and steelhead stocks and that's why we support a Thompson River bait ban. This is a fight we can win and a cause that will benefit the wild steelhead stocks of the Thompson River.

This is not a bait fisherman versus fly fisherman issue, this is an issue of doing what is best for a dwindling steelhead fishery. For those of you who don't know about the Thompson, it is a gorgeous river located about 4 hours from Vancouver. It was once home to a truly spectacular run of wild steelhead but because of a variety of issues this run has been greatly diminished and is now clutching on to existence.

The Thompson River is one of only a few trophy steelhead fisheries where bait is still allowed in British Columbia and the fact is that this bait fishery is not doing the Thompson River steelhead any favors.

Bowen Island Group Trip a Success

Chromer Sport Fishing recently hosted the guys from Silver Stag knives. They came up for a few days of salmon fishing and spent time on Bowen Island. The fishing was little slow, a few smaller chinook salmon were hooked and released and a few wild hatchery coho salmon were also boated. Lots of prawns and good times though!

Chum Fishing Gets Going on the Squamish

The first solid numbers of nice chum salmon have showed up in the Squamish River and fishing has got pretty good over the last week. This is due to the heavy rains we've experienced in south west British Columbia over the last week. The rain has bumped river levels up and brought these fresh chum salmon in.

Tyee Ready - Big QCI Chinook Release Vid

About as good as salmon fishing gets in the Queen Charlotte Islands. This video was put together by Dave Taylor, who we guide with at Langara Island Lodge.

It all happened one early evening in July after we had all been guiding and fishing had been slow. We took the small Zodiac inflatable boat out with one rod, one cut plug and did one slow troll by Channel Reef, a hot spot on Graham Island's northern most point.

Dave hooked the herring up, checked his roll and laid out a few pulls. Less than a minute after dropping that shiny cut plug herring into the water it was hammered... The rest is history and the legend of "Tyee Ready" was born...

What the heck is "Tyee Ready" you ask? You'll just have to come to Queen Charlotte Islands and fish with us to find out!

There are two important salmon rallys coming up in Vancouver within the next three weeks in support of wild salmon in British Columbia.

What: Stand Up for Wild Salmon Rally
When: September 16, 2009 from 12 pm to 1 pm
Where: Department of Fisheries and Oceans - Burrard & Pender in downtown Vancouver
Why: Because wild salmon are an integral part of the British Columbia coast and the government needs to realize that the province should be doing more to support and protect them.

What: Rally for Wild Salmon
When: October 3, 2009 at 1 pm
Where: Vancouver Art Gallery- Georgia Street
Why: To demand the DFO immediately remove salmon farms from the BC coast, and begin restoring our stocks of wild salmon-- and to begin a non-partisan, democratic citizen movement for the preservation of wild salmon.

If wild salmon in British Columbia are important to you then try to make it down to one or both of these important events. These are grassroot campaigns organized with the hopes of making a difference and furthering the support of wild salmon stocks in British Columbia.

This issue of BC Outdoors Sport Fishing magazine features an article on the Skeena River System. The Skeena River is home to unique runs of steelhead that move into the river each fall and travel into the Skeena's many tributaries. Tributaries that include the famous steelhead rivers of the Bulkley River, the Cooper River, the Kispiox River and the Babine River just to name a few.

The steelhead fishing in all these rivers and in the Skeena River is world class. Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report - Early Sept. 2009

The salmon fishing in Vancouver has been prolific this summer with lots of fish around and a surprising number of larger fish around!

In the last 10 days salmon fishing has really picked up. From being consistent through the summer, the salmon fishing in Vancouver has now gotten even better and is now in the midst of some of the best fishing Vancouver has experienced in the last 5 years.

The mouth of the Fraser River has seen great fishing for pink salmon an the occasional chinook (king) salmon. Over the past few days our boats that have been fishing the Fraser River mouth have been into double digit numbers of pinks and almost always have had chances at nice chinook (king) salmon.

What has been getting us excited though is the numbers of chinook salmon starting to show up at the Capilano River mouth. This has always been a solid fishery in September and early October but the initial signs point towards a fanstatic fall season of salmon fishing. This fishery is a 15 minute run from our downtown Vancouver moorage and is one that shouldn't be missed if you have the chance to go fishing while in Vancouver!

Rivers Inlet Salmon Fishing: A Spectacular 2009!

Rivers Inlet is located on the central coast of British Columbia. For years it has been a favorite fly-in destination for anglers from around the world who are in search of the biggest salmon on the Pacific coast.

Rivers Inlet has always enjoyed spectacular salmon fishing. The biggest chinook (king) salmon in British Columbia call Rivers Inlet home and for years it was the favorite destination for trophy hunters looking for chinooks in the the 60, 70 and even 80 pound class. Rivers Inlet has seen some slow years since the glory days up until the 2009 season.

The 2009 salmon fishing season in Rivers Inlet was one for the record books. Large numbers of chinook salmon returned to the three rivers at the head of Rivers Inlet in 2009 and this paid off huge for anglers who had not lost faith in the beautiful fishery. Starting in early July the big fish started moving in, holding at the mouth of Rivers Inlet to feed before making the 35 kilometer journey to the inlet's head and to their spawning grounds. As the summer wore on, more and more big fish kept showing up and in early August the head of Rivers Inlet saw salmon fishing as it was "back in the good 'ol days".

There was even a week were four chinook salmon over 70 pounds were taken, not something anywhere else on the BC coast can boast.

Langara Island Salmon Fishing Report

Its been too long since we've updated our blog, so here we go!

The boys at Chromer Sport Fishing have been up in the Queen Charlotte Islands all summer guiding and fishing. "Just Gettin Bent n' Paying the Rent" as we call it. We've had a pretty spectacular season and with only a month left in our Queen Charlotte Island salmon fishing season its time you booked a last minute trip to come fish with Yos and Tommy.

From our season start in late May we've have had consistently good fishing with heavy patches of spectacular fishing for chinook (king) salmon and coho (silver) salmon. There has been big fish around this year with several 50's, 60's and even a 76 lbs taken from (and released back to) Langara Island waters.

As the season has progressed the chinook salmon fishing has remained steady, and the coho fishing has steadily increased. There has been great coho fishing for the last few weeks and as they come into the local waters later than other salmon the forcast if for only an increase in size and in numbers of coho salmon. Its been a hot fishery and the flyrods are now getting pulled out and we've been cast flies at cohos and getting bent on double and triple headers!

So there is really only a month left to come up to Langara Island and stay at the luxurious Langara Island Lodge and fish with us, so get on it! Here is a bit more info on the salmon fishing packages we offer, click here...

Here is a few of the useful things that salmon fishing guides up on the BC coast like to use and that we're packing in our bags for this year of guiding on the coast.

In no particular order....

1. Gamakatsu Hooks - They are worth every penny. The best salmon fishing hooks out there. Buy the bulk packs 4/O or 5/O sizes. We use the reds and the flat finished ones. Stay away from the bright silver Gamakatsus, they tend to tarnish quick in the saltwater. Gamakatsu website is here.

2. Owner Circle Hooks - Owner makes some mean circle hooks that are awesome for halibut fishing and bottom fishing. Let a hali chew on one of these for a bit, they don't come out. Owner website is here.

3. Sunglasses - This is a no brainer. Get some good ones. We wear Smiths for no reason other than the have really good polarized lenses for fishing. Keep a back up pair cause if you're like us you'll for sure lose and break a few. Smith polarized sunnies website is here.

4. Islander Reels - Without a doubt the best saltwater mooching fishing reel out there. Full annodized and machined, they are made in BC. These are what all the boys on the coast fish with. Island website is here.

5. Waterproof Camera Case - If you don't have one of those indestructible waterproof/smashproof cameras, buy a case, they are $13 and will save you the headache drowning your digital. Mountain Equipment Co-op has some here.

6. Dry Bags - They're cheap, they're simple and they work. Stuff them full of all the stuff you need to be dry while out on the water. They come in 5 litre to 55 litre sizes. Check out the Sealine website, they have really nice dry bags good for fishing trips.

7. Comfy Rainboots - If you are gonna be in a boat guiding 14 hours a day might as well be comfy. Buy some rainboots that are comfy and stay away from steel-toed/shanked boots, they're not comfy. I wear the Viking Yacht boot. Check them out on the Viking website here.

8. Snap Lid Boxes - This was the best thing I bought last year. Usually they are for storing food or for packing lunches in but these things work great. You can buy them pretty much anywhere, they're cheap and they keep you stuff dry.

9. Handheld GPS - Even if you have a GPS on board don't leave the dock without one of these. Bring some extra batteries. The more ways to get home if things go wrong the better off you are. Check out the Garmin website, they are a trusted name in GPS technology.

10. Compass - If you don't know how to use it, you'll probably want to learn. If you lose your onboard GPS and your handheld ain't working, well then this little magnetic wonder will be there for you.

11. Smokers Kit - Keep a few lighters, preferably windproof ones, in a box with a cigar cutter and an extra pack of smokes. You never know, someone onboard might have a nic fit.

12. Satellite Radio - You could probably get away with not having this one but it's pretty nice to have a little AC/DC or Jimmy Buffet on in the background as you lounge around waiting for the next bite. We got SIRIUS radio in our boats.

13. Serrated Bait Knife - If you are cut-plug herring fishing for salmon like we do, go get a few serrated bait knives. They work well for getting good angles on herring and be sure to grind down the end on a stone so its easy to gut the herring without cutting their bellies. I use a set of cheap Ikea steak knives so I don't worry when they fall over board.

14. Hook Stone - If nothing else out there be sure to keep your hooks sticky sharp. Check them every once in a while, run a hook stone over them to make sure they sink deep into those hard mouthed chinooks.

15. Gloves - If your hands are getting cold out there you shouldn't be saltwater guiding, but you can use rubber gloves to combat fish poisoning and work gloves when handling anchor ropes or when dealing with big halibut and ling cod.

16. Shark Hook - Huh? Yup, go buy yourself a big ol' shark hook. Tie it off to the side of the boat and slide it into big halibut's mouths when they come up. Easier than harpooning them and you rarely loose halibut this way.

17. Casting Rod with Buzz Bombs - When salmon fishing is slow and you guests are bored give them a casting rod set up. It will keep them occupied which means they forget about the slow fishing and often you'll get salmon hammering a Buzz Bomb when they won't hit a herring.

18. Plasti Dip - If you are mooching for salmon dip your weights in this stuff. It's what they dip tool handles in but if you dip weights before using them it will save your reels when wrapping up gear at the end of the day. Find it at hardware stores or check the Plasti Dip website.

19. First Aid Kit - Yes you need one of these. If you're guiding for a season you will cut yourself, you will bury a hook into yourself and there will be blood in the boat that does not belong to a fish. First aid kit bandages sure beat hitting the dock bleeding!

20. Reel Lube & Oil - Take good care of your equipment. Guests will notice and it will save you money in the long run. We keep our Islanders running smooth with Abu Garcia reel lube. You can find it here on the Abu Garcia website.

21. Gravol - Used by seasick guests and hung over fishing guides throughout the world.

Environment Friendly Bioline Fishing Line

Just got some samples of Bioline Fishing Line from our friend Mike Nelson.

Bioline is a fishing line that has been developed with anglers and the environment in mind. Most fishing lines take up to 600 years to biodegrade but Bioline biofilament fishing line biodegrades in the environment in 5 years.

Inevitably we all lose gear while fishing. It just happens. But if you should break off a leader or length of line when using Bioline, it will be gone in five years versus six hundred.

Stored in its original package, Bioline has a five-year shelf life. Once spooled on a reel, the line will retain 100% of its strength for a period of 10 to 12 months, with no special handling.

We're going to be using Bioline tippet when guiding our summer trout fishing trips and we're going to be using some of Bioline's heavier fishing lines when we're saltwater salmon fishing up the coast of British Columbia this summer.

Chromer Hits Australia

We had to get out of the cold for a little bit so we head 'Down Under' for lots of sun, a bit of surf and a bit of fishing. We didn't take it too seriously as you can see. We did miss out on some marlin fishing though, the wind picked up in Sydney so we couldn't make it out. Back to beautiful BC, the tan has faded but here's a few pics from our fishing adventures in Australia.

Squamish River Steelhead Fishing

Our winter fishing season in Whistler, BC is starting to wind down after a pretty solid fun season. Fishing around Whistler started picking up a bit late this year but before long there were some nice bright steelhead in the Squamish River system. The Squamish River has long been a favorite winter destination for anglers looking for winter run steelhead.

In the late spring, as water levels rise on the Squamish River and Cheakamus River it becomes more difficult to fish. The waters have been on the rise for a little bit now as warmer temperatures melt the snow pack.

We have been fishing and guiding a lot on the Squamish for steelhead this year and are now trying to sneak in a few extra days before the rivers blow. A couple of the Chromer boys were just down fishing on a sunny afternoon and found this little beautiful Squamish River steelhead.

Whistler Winter Fly Fishing

Fishing in Whistler is beginning to get going here. The warm spring like weather we are experiencing has helped in bumping water levels up a bit in the Squamish River and the Cheakamus River. This has brought some steelhead into both rivers and got resident bull trout moving around a bit too.
As we move into March, we'll be sure to keep you updated with river conditions and fishing reports from the Whistler and Squamish areas. Along with steelhead fishing in the Squamish River system we are also looking forward to some chinook (king) salmon moving there way into the Lower Lillooet River. We'll keep you updated when some of these 'chromers' show up.

Gold River Roadtrip

Here's a few pics from our latest steelhead fishing trip out to the Gold River on Vancouver Island. The Gold River, home to a run of winter steelhead, flows into Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island's west coast.
There was quiet the crew of boys that headed out to the Gold for a few day road trip. After driving through a Vancouver Island snowstorm we got to Campbell River late and met up with a few of our guiding friends.
With all the cold weather we've had in British Columbia this year it didn't do much for the fishing conditions, the water levels were very low and clear. Those of you who know winter steelhead fishing know that this makes it tough and there were a few fish around but they saw us coming from a mile away.

So in the end there was no steelies hooked but we made the most of it, had a good time with all our Island pals and we'll be back next year.

Rivers Inlet Powder Days

Here's a few pics sent to us from Barbara Kelly of the Rivers Inlet Sportsmans Club of winter wonderland Rivers Inlet. Located about 300 miles north of Vancouver on the central coast of British Columbia, Rivers Inlet is a famous locale for salmon fishing in the summer months and by the looks of it may have more snow than Whistler in the winter months!

Whistler Winter Fly Fishing

We're gearing up in Whis for the upcoming winter/spring fishing season. Right now the snow is flying pretty hard, make it more ski weather than fish weather but that will soon change. Fishing will pick up in mid February and continue to be strong until the rivers blow out which is usually during mid May sometime.

Steelhead will be moving into the Squamish River and Cheakamus River sytems and Chinooks (Kings) will be moving into the Lower Lillooet River soon. Bull trout will be around as well and are usually pretty feisty as soon as the waters murk a bit.

I'll be guiding all winter long for Whistler Fly Fishing so if you plan on visiting Whistler or Vancouver anytime in the next few months be sure to send me an email or give me a call and I'll give you the latest fishing report and get you geared up for a guided day on the water.

At Chromer Sport Fishing we take our fishing serious but we also like to focus our efforts on conservation awareness. We spend 100's of days on the water each year fishing and guiding and we took these pics during the summer of 2008 in hopes they would inspire anglers from around the world to think about conservation and to support catch and release efforts. Bulkley River Steelhead 2008

Squamish Chum Fishing

They we're a little late but the chum salmon did return to the Squamish River north of Vancouver this year in solid numbers. Lots of nice bright fish were found in the lower stretched of the Squamish and Cheakamus rivers. Although water levels tended to be all over the place in terms of height and flow we still had many successful days on the water with lots of happy anglers. The Squamish River is about an hour north of Vancouver and about 45 minutes south of Whistler making it ideal for a short drive and an enjoyable guided day out on the water. Along with good chum salmon fishing action there were coho salmon around and plenty of bald headed eagles. Salmon season on the Squamish River is best during October and November, so its not too late to come up for a day, or plan for next year. Big Steelhead Returns to Bulkley River

Well, it’s official, 2008 has seen the best steelhead returns in the Skeena River watershed in almost 15 years. This made for a spectacular season for steelhead anglers at Frontier Farwest Steelhead Lodge on the famed Bulkley River. Clients enjoyed multiple hookups daily, solid water conditions and a warm August and September. There was lots of big steelhead caught in the Bulkley River too this year making for a great first season for Derek Botchford, owner of Frontier Farwest Steelhead Lodge and all of his experienced guides. Bulkley River Steelhead 2007

In October 2007 we headed up to the Bulkley River in the Bulkley Valley near Smithers, British Columbia.

We had a good crew of boys and fished hard for a few days. We did a day drift, ripped around in our buddy Pete's jet boat, fought through a few days of tough fishing and pinned a couple of nice Bulkley River steelhead.

Queen Charlotte Tour 2007

The Queen Charlotte Islands are home to some of the finest saltwater salmon fishing in world. The Island's natural beauty, untouched coastline, thriving wildlife combine with spectacular salmon fishing and halibut fishing to make them a destination for serious anglers each summer.

Salmon Sharks are caught occasionally in the Queen Charlotte Islands but never in the numbers they were in September 2007. For a few days we tried to catch one. After hooking lots and having them bust us off, we rigged up some steel leaders and had an amazing afternoon shark fishing off of Andrews Point on Langara Island.
